‘On a mission for financial literacy’
CAN is helping a number of clients to set up their finances using Xero accounting software, to give them a greater understanding and control over their financial management.
As CAN Finance Team Leader Brian Titley explained, using cloud software like Xero moves clients from often simply using spreadsheets – or even classic ‘keeping receipts in a shoebox’ solutions – to a robust system that can help people manage finances and plan for future growth.
“I’m on a little bit of a mission to get co-operatives and social enterprises more financially literate,” said Brian.
“When organisations get to a certain size, they really need to have better control of their finances. Xero is easy to use, easy to input and the quality of the data you can get out is good.”
Typically CAN’s package that helps clients move to Xero involves four days: the first is a set-up day looking at structure, with the second offering training on day-to-day use, as well as getting bank accounts connected and setting up rules.
Two further days of support can then be used and paid for when needed. And as Xero is cloud-based, support can also be delivered remotely.
“So we take clients from not necessarily knowing that much about accounts, to setting up a bookkeeping system with them,” said Brian. “From there we train them how to use it and support them using it. This gives them a much better understanding of financial management, such as how to read a balance sheet and profit and loss and what it all means.”
Beyond better day-to-day management and control, CAN can also work alongside clients on projections and all aspects of planning for growth, from the finances to the HR challenges. CAN also has experience of, and can work with customers already using, many alternative financial software packages, both cloud- and desktop-based.
